Sometimes dark, sometimes whimsical, sometimes extremely technical, sometimes deliberately simplistic, Citizen Genet is musically restless and insatiably curious. They thrive on surprising the audience by injecting sounds from every niche in the musical universe into their work. Whether dropping Wagnerian leitmotifs amidst indie-pop hooks and acoustic crooning or creating tongue-in-cheek, genre bending adaptations of classic rock staples, Citizen Genet pursue what sounds good, even if it defies conventional wisdom. Especially if it defies conventional wisdom. Bubblegum pop it is not, but that does not mean that you won’t have Citizen Genet stuck in your head. But it will be stuck in a different way. While bubble gum sticks to your shoe, Citizen Genet sticks to your ribs like a feast composed of dishes from distant countries and disparate traditions. You take-in too much because your curiosity gets the best of you, but you always leave satisfied and expanded. Maybe you could call it smörgåsbord pop.
